What Are You Wearing?

Postby matlobi » Tue Oct 11, 2016 2:10 pm

I've got this beauty from 1957 on today.

I really like it, as it's in brand new condition, but it's gained nearly two hours in the last 12. There is something seriously wrong with it.

I guess I'll wear the 1958 Viscount instead. It stays within 10-30 seconds per 24 hours.

I suspect the issue with your Marlin relates to the balance beat. Maybe just needs a service but on other hand it could be a sign of wear to the end caps. Have you serviced a #22 yet? Now would be a good time to try.

I agree with Tony, a service is a good start. Really fast usually means the hairspring on the balance sticking, which speeds it up, or *very* low amplitute (swing) which could be old oil gunk, or perhaps worn bearings.

If you don't want to mess with it, I certainly will take it off your hands, as it is a birth year watch for me :-)

It's certainly worth getting back into shape, though, as I would guess the problem is just ancient gunk in the works, but if you want to do it yourself, and don't have any experience, I'd suggest practicing on a less pristine example :-)

I really do like it, but I have limited practice in servicing these and I would really hate to mess it up. I could perhaps be enticed in a trade of sorts. ;)

Hmm, I think that could be fun! Didn't Mel set up a section for just that purpose? Yeah, the trading tables! I'll have to take a look at my stash.

I've pulled out some of my Timex collection so that I can put them in my rotation. Today it's this 46560 3271 (1971) which I believe is a Viscount Calendar. At some point I'll put a group shot on the trading tables, most of them I'll set free for the right deal. Not all though :)

Today is a 2010 2466, a '66 Marlin. Looks a lot like Tony's Mercury, similar numerals and no seconds hand.

Another from '66, unlike the other one it is not deprived of a seconds hand. 2024 2466
